Join Global Solutions Pittsburgh, local experts, and community members for a panel discussion and Q&A about gender-specific violence directed towards women and the efforts taking place around the world to create gender equality and protect women’s rights.
The discussion will focus both on acts of violence that are a direct result of the individual’s womanhood (such as female infanticide) as well as violence that is prompted by a woman’s personal decisions (such as the desire to get an education). In addition to these topics, we will discuss domestic violence, rape, female genital mutilation, and violence towards women as a result of their determination to fight for their rights, wear certain clothing, participate in sports, etc. The discussion will also be geared towards discussing efforts, both local and international, that are being made to raise awareness of violence against women and combat gender-specific assault. Attempts will be made to review different possible sources of this brutality including cultural, political and economic contexts and individual responsibility.
On the panel for this discussion will be:
- La’Tasha D. Mayes, Founder & Executive Director of New Voices Pittsburgh
- Scott F. Kiesling, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh
