Global Solutions Pittsburgh, along with Baker Leadership and Carlow University, is hosting a cutting-edge conference for high-school and university student leaders in the Pittsburgh area, entitled Student Empowership 2011!

A combination of empowerment and leadership, this one-day conference will focus on providing high school and college students with concrete, skills-based training on how to become active in either student centered or community based organizations. Expert training will be provided on topics such as leadership, organizing with social media, fundraising, budgeting, and event planning. In addition to providing practical skills training, this conference will serve as a means of networking for the students, enabling them to learn about different initiatives taking place within the city and on various campuses.

This FREE conference will take place on October 1, 2011 at Carlow University in A.J. Palumbo Hall. It will run from 9 AM – 4:30 PM and will include a complimentary breakfast and lunch. Breakfast will also feature our morning keynote speakers, who will talk about the importance of student leadership and why students should feel empowered to work towards their goals. Two of our fantastic keynote speakers will be Penny Semaia, Assistant Athletic Director for Student Life at the University of Pittsburgh and Chaz Kellem, Manager of Diversity Initiatives for the Pittsburgh Pirates, both of whom are champions in the community for encouraging students to get involved and make a difference.

During lunch, we are honored to have former Pittsburgh City Councilman and renowned civil rights activist Sala Udin as our keynote speaker. Among other things Udin was a part of the Freedom Rider campaign, a friend to August Wilson and an associate of one Dr. Martin Luther King, just to name a few.

Along with the keynote presentations, there will be three breakout sessions during the day from which students can choose from a variety of different workshops to participate in. These workshops will be led by local experts and leaders, with years of experience in which to share with the students. A few of the presenters for the day will be Lani Redinger of Nakturnal, Holly McIntosh from the Office of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Brian Honigman of LunaMetrics, and Kristina Elias of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. More information on the presenters, descriptions of the workshops, and a detailed schedule of events can be found here.

The only requirements for Student Empowership 2011 is that participants must be high-school or college students and they must pre-register for the day. Please see the registration form below to reserve your spot for Student Empowership 2011!
