Global Citizenship in the Classroom
Teacher Workshops Spring 2008

This March and April, Global Solutions Education Fund and the Pennsylvania Ethnic Heritage Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh hosted two different professional development workshop for area teachers. These are part of our Teachers Program, which seeks to provide educators with knowledge, tools, and resources to address global issues in local classrooms.

The first workshop, “Ethnic Identity and Conflict,” was held on the evenings of March 3 and March 10. The workshop introduced participants to the basics of ethnic identity and presented some theories on the sources and causes of ethnic conflict. Teachers were treated to several guest speakers who exam-ined individual cases of ethnic conflict including So-mali-Bantus, the war in Kosovo, and the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur.

“Globalization and Immigration” was held on the evenings of March 31and April 7. This workshop examined the many reasons why people cross borders and considered the statistics for global migration. It also looked at the issue of immigrant re-settlement though local and global case studies of the past and present. The workshop also included an overview of the immigration history of Pittsburgh and its impact on the modern make-up of the city.
